It’s a myth that puberty cures bedwetting. Bedwetting in teens occurs in around 2% of 18 year olds, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but if you’re one of those 2% it can mean the world. The impact on a teen’s social life is significant. Heading off to varsity becomes a major challenge and relationships are often pushed aside.

The causes of bedwetting in teens are much like those in younger children. Partly genetic and partly lifestyle related. Lifestyle factors take on a teenage twister with caffeine intake, irregular sleep patterns, stress and a poor diet as all possible contributors. One factor that’s often overlooked is chronic constipation full bowels press on the bladder and can cause uncontrolled bladder contractions. Improving general lifestyle habits implementing a regular sleep routine and eating a balanced diet can make a big difference to both constipation and staying dry. Bedwetting alarms have been found to be highly effective amongst teenagers allowing them to get into a regular nighttime routine. Unfortunately there’s no evidence to show that they have any impact on teenage mood swings.
